Every business owner will eventually leave their business. The question is whether he or she will be able to convert the value of the business into dollars that will finance the next phase of his or her life.

That is why I advise every business owner to run their business as if they were going to sell it in 3 to 5 years even if they have no plans to do so.

Many business owners are so busy running the day to day operations that they don't have time to focus on the long-term value of their company. If he or she were to plan on a sale in the next few years, decisions made today will result in increasing the value of the business and the business owner will be in a better position to sell the business when the time comes.
